Where or who do I write to to cancel junk mail coming to my address?

Last night I returned from work to find my posbox crammed with NINE thick Toy's 'R' Us brochures amongst several Kwik Save, Argos brochures, numerous takeaway menus and other such waste coming out of my letterbox and as this happens quite often, I rreally annoyed at the waste that goes straight in the bin... we don't have recycling bins near us and i don't drive.... and its generally just really annoying.

I know it's possible as it was in the paper a couple of months back when a postman got sacked for telling everyone.

yes I registered with the mps and also the telephone one and it has made a big difference. Took about a month to kick in though.

Registering with MPS won't stop the takeaway menus, leaflets, free newspapers etc, only the mail that is actually addressed to you.

I a small rainforest through my letterbox every week (Sunday being the worst day) and am seriously considering taping my letterbox shut at the weekends!

I thought it would stop junk mail to 'the occupier' of the property... my flat is rented.

How can i stop leaflets, menus and brochures coming through then... they're the worst.

I know how you feel, I could wallpaper my whole house with takeaway menus!

I don't think you can stop them, they are usually delivered by someone who either runs the takaway or has been paid by them to deliver them (well they are where I live anyway!). I can't see a way of letting every takeaway in your area lnow that you don't want one of their menus. Even if you did contact them all, they probably wouldn't take any notice!

We get an old man round on Sunday who delivers the Tesco / Netto / Asda / Toys R Us type flyers and brochures - if you get one person delivering such things, maybe grab him next time you see him (not literally!) and ask him to stop posting them or ask who employs him and write to them.

By the way, what IS the MPS site for if not junk mail? I had a brief look during lunch break and thought it would get rid of any unwanted mail that DIDN'T bear my name?

I have a note on my letterbox (posted by previous tenant) requesting no circulars or free papers & a sticker advising door-to-door sales not to call. Is either sign obeyed? Is it 'eck!

Just wanted to point out that some of the advertising may be delivered by your postman, who is obliged to deliver it (and gets paid per leaflet for doing so) and should therefore ignore any notice on the door, although any sensible postie will usually accede to the householders request.
Royal Mail will have a contract with the supplier of the leaflets to deliver to every address in specific post codes, and checks are made to see that this is happening. The postie can be reprimanded if he misses any addresses, but mainly this is to ensure that he is not just chucking the lot in a skip and claiming payment for delivering them.

Thinking more about this, you could have a word with your local delivery office and get a note attached to the posties round saying "No advertising to this address". It may work.

Willowman is right about the postman delivering 'junk mail'.
You can 'Opt-out' by telling the Post Office you want to opt-out of getting unaddressed mail delivered by the postman.

Write a letter to the address given and they will reply, telling you lots of good reasons why you shouldn't opt-out, but be firm. You will then be sent this form that the Post Office will send and you just sign it and return. It takes about a month to operate. Even then, some will still slip through, but not as many as before.
