If you were going on holiday with a friend but have to cancel because the friend's next of kin (not planning on going) develops a serious illness, would you be entitled to claim for any money you have lost?

well get whoever it is to look at their policy! its hardly likely that someone on here is psychic and can tell what is on the policy. Each policy will be different depending on what you've paid to be covered. sorry to be blunt, but there it is!
Most holiday policies cover the policyholder not being able to go away because of serious illness of the insured, but not for others. Nevertheless worth checking what this policy says.
I've looked at my own policy, and yes, it would be covered.

....an immediate relative of yours or of any person you are intending to travel with......

So it can't be that unusual - it's a freebie policy

But YMMV
