Cooling off period?

Last night i was persuaded by a doorstep caller representing a company that just fundraises for charities. It was for a dogs charity and presumably this company takes a cut of the monthly direct debit which has been set up. I was told it was for a minimum period of one year. In hindsight i feel this was a bit pressured and does a cooling off period exist on this type of contract and if so how long , thankyou

Can't you just cancel the direct debit with your bank? I assume it was only for a small amount and so I would imagine that they are hardly likely to sue you.

There's no contract involved to cool off from - you got nothing in return for it - no consideration, no contract..

Just cancel the DD.

With anything signed for at home there is a mandatory cooling off period of 21 days, this is for all contracts signed for AT HOME. It does not apply for in the stret, shop etc. So you are covered as long as you notify them within the period of time, it also pays to cancel the DD at the same time

Zacmaster - no there is no contract. A contract to be legal has to be in exchange for something, not one-sided. If one party gets nothing out of it there is no contract to enforce.

I'd never buy anything from doorsteppers. Cancel your DD and if you want to help an animal charity why don't you donate food to your local dog/cats home. That way nobody else gets a cut of your donation..it goes straight to the recipients.

Reading the small print it does say 12 month commitment, guess i chalk it up to experience?

I used to work for a company that processed the DDebit forms from these chuggers (charity muggers), the rates they charge the charities are a complete joke some are as high as �55 odd pounds per sign up, so if you decide to donate �5 per month the charity will only get �5 from that for the first year.
