Wireless network via AOL broadband using cable modem?

Is it possible to share AOL internet access using a wireless router where the connection to AOL uses their own cable modem?

I am currently staying at my inlaws and there are now 3 of us who want to use 1 PC with internet access so any advice would be gratefully accepted!

Googling this and calling AOL customer Service has left me none the wiser!

I haven't seen the AOL modem, but you should be able to plug in a router by using an ethernet cable.

Ethel would be right, except that the AOL modem probably uses USB, not ethernet.

AOL is, I believe, ADSL broadband down your phone line, so it's not actually a cable modem.

In summary, if the AOL modem has a ethernet output, then yes you can just plug in a wireless router for more than one computer, as Ethel says.

However, I bet they use USB as most other ADSL providers do, and so you'll need a modem+router unit, which is why they exist on places like ebuyer.com.

The AOL modem uses the NTL cable network and it connects to the main PC via USB, although it does have an ethernet socket.

I'm trying to use a Netgear DG834G wireless modem/router in conjunction with the AOL modem but cannot seem to make them recognise each other.

How should they be linked set up to function correctly?

Your router is for ADSL and as you are using NTL cable it is not compatible and will never work..

You need a DSL router

When using a router with a cable modem, connect the router to the cable modem using an ethernet cable, and connect the PC to the router, using another ethernet cable.

Disconnect the power from everything, power up the cable modem, leave for a couple of minutes, then power up the router, then the PC.

Don't forget to set security on the router if you are accessing the internet using wireless connections.
