Does anyone know if any legal requirements or qualifications are needed to open a property letting agency? Many thanks

No, there's no qualifications required as such. Anyone can open a lettings agency. You will have to know however the laws pertaining to tenancy, the holding of deposits, contracts, legal notices etc.
If I was letting my house through an agency, I would certainly want to know that you had belonged to ARLA to ensure you knew what you were doing. How do I know you wouldn't run off with my rent?
further to previous answers, there are no formal qualifications required but there is a strong rumour that Lettings agents will need to be ARLA registered within the next year.

NAEA, the association for Estate Agents also covers those in the Lettings business.

Both associations offer short courses and longer term studies to a degree level, depending on the amount of experience you have in the market, at least a day course would be reccommended to get to grips with the relevant aspects of law etc.
