I have an account with abbey and have a visa electron with it which is s**t as it doesn't work in loads of places and thanks god I don't have a car yet otherwise I'd always need cash as I don't know any petrol stations which accept them.
Anyway how can I get a different card of them?

hve you asked them?
what reasons are they giving you for not upgrading your card? How old are you?

I'm 20 and I haven't asked yet
Ask them.

It may be that because of your age you haven't yet built up a substantial credit rating (the more you borrow and pay back, the better your rating). So they may not give you a credit card just yet, but a debit card would be better for the time being.
You could always get yourself a pre paid Mastercard or Visa card.

I have a VISA Electron card through Halifax, and I use it in loads of places with no problem at all ! All the major supermarkets accept it (Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, Morrisons etc) - just been into town at lunchtime and used it in Debenhams and M&S. Use it a restaurants, pubs, online - in fact the only place it seems not to be accepted at is for buying fuel at the drive-through pumps.

I also like the fact that my balance is shown in "real time" - the transactions I made at lunchtime were taken away from my account balance straight away - so you always know where you're at financially !

So long as you have run your account satisfactory, and usually for a minimum of 6 months, then you should be ok for an upgrade to a better card.
Go and ask........its the only way you will find out!
