car insurance classification

am getting quotes for my husband's car insurance. He is a semi retired builder using small car to transport his hand tools and working very locally. His current insurance company classified this as social domestic and pleasure plus commuting A quote I received today from Post Office called it class 1 business use. Since then I asked for a quote from compare the market.com who also provided a best quote from PO but I entered SD&M + commuting and the quote is �12 lower.
Can anyone clarify the difference please

Most companies will term sd&p as 'communting to and from 1 fixed place of work'

Tesco, for example, will deem your husband to need PBU (personal business use) or Class 1 as it's also known as.

I'm surprised they charge extra for it, but for the sake of �12, you should really get the class 1 to be sure. the other option is to ring the company itself.

thank you for your reply sifellis. Maybe I have got it wrong about the difference in price but checking through the cover details that was the only thing I could see that was different. The Post Office 'call centre' was quite helpful when I rang them to confirm my original quote. The new one, also through them, with NU, is �12 cheaper so I'll ring them again to be on the safe side. I haven't found anything cheaper and they are a couple of pounds more than the renewal quote with Kwikfit and Groupama but has �100 excess as against �300

I work in Insurance.

Class A cover (Social Domestic & Pleasure) will cover you to travel to and from one fixed place of work (good for, say, a teacher). Class 1 business use adds extra cover which allows you to travel to different places of work (which would be better for a supply teacher, travelling to different schools).

Where I work (Direct Line), Class 1 is free, but some insurers charge.

thanks apex204 I thought man at PO said class 1 was free too so it does not solve the mystery of the cheaper one. I will phone them after the weekend ( when I had cause to phone them about my insurance I think I spoke to a 'Saturday girl' and I had to ring again on a week day to get satisfactory response) The quote I got from Direct Line was higher
