Why crush untaxed cars?

Why do the road tax department crush cars that are untaxed instead of auctioning them like the parking departments do?

Hi David,
That's because the age and condition of the majority of untaxed cars means they are next to worthless, they probably won't have an MOT either and are more than likely unroadworthy and as for insurance .....
Cars with neither tax or MOT are usually involved in criminal activity too.
Most councils allow owners two weeks to claim the car. To get the car back its a fine of around �200 plus a new tax disc, another �205. I bet the most untaxed cars aren't worth that much. Some news stories here

Thanks pug, makes sense now. They show decent cars being crushed in the ads so give quite the wrong impression!
