2 questions! being OVERpaid and UNDERpaid

Hi
Just recently I have realised that for the past4 months I have been UNDERpaid at work, (my hours increased slightly and they haven't been adding it to my salary!)
Over the same time period a colleague (whose hours were reduced over the same time period) has been OVERpaid.
Question is:
Will I get this all back in one month ie: in my next payslip ( I plan to show our manager on Monday)
And also... it seems unfair that my colleague might get the full amount deducted all in one go for overpayment..can she insist that they take it off at a small amount each month. It's their mistake after all.

Your friend should have notice the mistake in the first place. She might be able to negotiate with your employers but don't hold out much hope. I am at a loss how someone can be paid the wrong amount for this long without spotting it. Still the money will come in handy for paying the Christmas bills.....a way of saving without saving.
If your friend who was overpaid also did a lot of overtime and it was reasonable that they wouldn't have noticed the overpayment they could cite the doctrine of equitable estoppel. I have used this many times (not for myself). If your friend hasn't used the extra cash for something special but just used it for normal everyday expenses then they may not have to pay it back. It may help if you have a union to fight your corner.

If its a genuine over payment, it should be paid back in full. Instalments are at the discretion of the employer and may be possible.
Sure as hell though, your employers will appreciate your honesty if you tell them before they notice - great for your career, I assure you.
