0800 numbers

How much does it cost to phone an 0845 number? My Bank - HSBC - has an 0845 number. AND I pay �12 per month for the 'privilege' of having an account at this Bank. I suspect I'm being ripped off....

0845 is classed as a 'local rate' number - ie the same cost as if you were calling someone in the same code area as you.

So it should cost 3 - 4 p per minute

The big problem is that there are a lot of companies who offer free phone calls - but these are to land line numbers starting 01 or 02 - not 0845.

0870 are the ones to watch - these cost around 10 per minute.

Most companies do not make a profit out of 0845 - the same is not true for 0870 numbers

ZebUK is spot on, I have a package and always use the saynoto0870 site for the reason he says. HSBC accounts which charge a flat fee such as yours are not a rip-off, you should really look into the benefits that are included. My son has one and gets free travel insurance for the family which does save a lot.

You can obtain yearly travel insurance for a family from around � 45 to � 50
