Cattery/Kennels
2 Answers
We are investigating the possibility of opening a cattery/kennels in outbuildings at our home subject to planning permission which we have applied for but would be grateful for any other advice anyone can offer on opening this type of business. We have lots of experience of cats and dogs and their needs being doting owners of 8 cats and 4 dogs of our own at present and many others in the past but are not sure what else this type of business would entail or where to find further information. Thanks

You will both have to register as Self Employed, pay 10 a month in respect of Class 2 National Insurance, then fill in your tax returns to advise of your share of profits each year. You will pay 20% tax on all your profits above 5435, and 8% Class 4 National Insurance on everything above 5435 too.
If you believe your turnover (not profit) will rise to over 64k per year, you should think of becoming VAT registered. So will add 17.5% to your invoices to clients.
As for business side of things, I have a lot of espereicen as kennelamid, but you also seem to , so this will not be an issue. I'd get good insurance in case of disease amongst animals etc.

And this is a good place of contact, not just internet based either.Tthey have centres in many towns and cities where you can go and you may feel you can speak more freely as it is not the Tax office.
