My son is going to New York as a student for one year.What is the cheapest method of supporting him.Can I open a bank account and pay in pounds and he can use in the states as dollars

The crux point comes that at some point you have to pay to convert pounds to dollars. You could get family credit card on your account for your son, and the bill would come to you to pay in pounds.

Or you could pay money into his bank account and he could use his debit card to pay bills in the US and withdraw cash.

If its a Nationwide account they are best for cheapest charges when using abroad.
