If my pro rate salary is 21,000, what is my gross monthly salary? I have just received my first pay packet and I am sure it is wrong. I really should have paid more attention in Maths lessons!

21000/12 = 1750 before tax
take tax as around 22%
(1750/100)*78 = 1365
then you have any benefits that the company charge you for like pensions etc... comming off of that but then pensions have a different tax althogether

hope this helps

Thanks DarkMajes71c! They have my gross down as 1500 so is this definitely wrong??
How many hours do you work? Is 21000 for the hours you do, or the pay for full time work?
Question Author
that is my salary, irrespective of hours worked
When calculating the tax you have to pay you need to take into account your personal allowance - this is how much you can earn before you start to pay tax. It's probably about 5.5k at the moment, you then pay tax at 20%.

Also, any pension payments you make through your pay are taken out before tax is taken off.

go to listentotaxman.com its got a really good tax claulator in there and it takes NI into accoutn as well
The poster was asking for the gross figure, not nett.

Just divide your annual salary by 12.

Do you mean that 21,000 is the pro rata full time wage or your part time wage?

I get paid 21,000 as a full time employee, working Mon to Friday 9-5 and get paid the same regardless of any extra hours worked etc.
what date did you start? are you working a week ahead?

Question Author
ahaaa that may well be it! I started on 6th of the month. Thanks!
it wont hurt just to check what dates you have been paid for anyway, just so that you can confirm figures
It also won't hurt to get some maths lessons. I can't believe that anyone is so dense as to be unable to divide 21,000 by 12. You don't work in my company's pay office by any chance do you?

Your Tax Code on your pay slip tells you what what your allowance is, it should be a 3 figure number. Add a nought(0) to the end of it and you will have an amount which is the amount of money you can earn before tax/year .Multiply the remainder by 20% (divide by 5) and you will have a figure which is the amount of tax you will pay annually. Take this away from 21000 after dividing it by 12 to get your monthly pay. Look at the amount you have been charged in national Insurance which will also be deducted and your left with your monthly pay.
Glad I waited on this one. I assume the reference to 'prorate' was a red herring and sssg was really wanting us to divide 21000 by 12 for her.
If my pro rata salary is £21,000 what will be my gross monthly salary. It is based on a 22 hour week
