I was curious whether British banks would be willing to give a loan to someone who was setting up a business not in the UK but overseas? Moreover, do govt. start up grants, etc apply to business ideas for overseas?... Any hints/tips greatly appreciated.

Very doubtful, especially if the business owner / person responsible for the loan will be overseas as well they wold struggle to reclaim anything if something went wrong.

Same for grants, most grants are indirectly to support the local economy through the business ie jobs, buying form local suppliers etc. so unless the export department are interested i would think its not going to happen
