My daughter has just moved out into shared student accomodation in a rented house. She doesn't live far away and will pop home occasionally. We have been told by our house contents insurers that her personal belongings - laptops etc. are still insured under our house contents and she doesn't need to take out separate insurance. If this is the case, why do so many students have to insure their stuff?

Maybe not all students' parents have the same insurance policy as you.
Agree with Ethel I would check your policy carefully. When my daughter was at Uni we had to take out a seperate policy. It covered her possesions also whilst the house was empty at Christmas and when she came home for a weekend etc. Did it through Endsleigh they specialise on student cover. Think it cost around 90 for the year

Thanks for your answers. I've rung our insurance company who have said she is covered. I've also asked them to "flag up" the fact we rang about this.
