it's about investing large amounts of money in order to increase it. For ex. private pension funds (unlike occupational pensions) are "managed" by "professionals" who invest the money in various ways (I am not au fait with all the different types of investments: stock market, gilts, there are all sorts) so that the pension pot grows. Fund managers earn a lot of money if they do well because they are paid a percentage of the capital growth.
