4 Answers
To cut to a short story, i have received a letter from a glasgow debt recovery agency, many years ago i had a hire agreement with a tv rental company, i took on a package of a telly and etc, decided to buy my own telly,so they uplifted the package, which included a cheap portable telly, which i let to be believe was a gift for taking this package,so they said that it should have been returned all so,i was dealing with my housing association debt councellor, who said just to ignore any letters from people like this,as scottish law is different after so many years and this debt is maybe 12 years old,its obvious they have sold the debt on to a scottish agency so they can hound me so a telly that probably has cost that company 20 now costs me over a 1000 pounds, they say that they can attach this debt to my wages and savings, can they please any scottish abers in the know on this one thanks!!!

The most important thing is not to acknowledge owing anything. Write to the debt recovery agency saying that this debt does not exist and that you will take legal action against them if this harassment/persecution continues. If they ask for details do not acknowledge that any debt ever existed. Hope this helps but for your own piece of mind check with an expert, eg CAB.
Phew, that was a long sentence- 171 words without a full stop.
It's never a good idea I'm afraid to ignore debts. When did they first tell you that you owed the money? Have they explained how the bill increased to 1000, and did they advise you that there would be charges for costs if you didn't pay?

I agree with the suggestion of going to CAB but I'm not sure I agree with AdamCTarcos's suggested approach. Debts can become time barred (maybe 7 years not 5, but I've forgotten) but I don't think this applies if they have been asking for the money or if you've moved and not told them. And even if they are statute barred the debt still exists and they have the right to keep asking you for the money. And I'm sure the debt will be on your credit file.
Good luck.
