Transferring Funds from the US to the UK

What is the best way to transfer funds from a US bank account to a UK account? I have spoken to a few banks but they offer a very poor exchange rate. Is there a company/ bank which offers transfers at a set charge rather than making commission or offering a poor exchange rate?
