what are the main economic indicators that affect the financial market?

At the moment Oil prices are causing all the problems..normally however, Interest rates and exchange rates are the drivers.

The USA has a big problem with its Balance of Payments..they export far too much....

Hmm, suspect the US actually import too much.  Exporting is only bad if a) you don't get paid or b) you have nothing left to eat.

balance of payments

inflation rate

interest rate

gross domestic product (hugely overrated)

unemployment rate

government surplus / deficit

national debt

exchange rate

commodity pricing (as noted above, particularly oil)

various confidence surveys (consumer, purchasing managers, employers)
