http://mail.google.com
It's free to use, for any purpose (including business use), and comes with lots of free space and the best spam filter available right now.
The only down side with this is that your address will not be 'professional', in that it's going to be something like [email protected].
If you want to get an email address like [email protected], then it gets more complicated. It'll cost you about 6 every two years for your domain name, and perhaps some extra if you want a website at that address.
Write back with what you'd prefer, and I can add more instructions :)

I don't know anything about gmx.co.uk, so can't comment.
To get your own domain, go somewhere like this:
http://www.123-reg.co.uk/
Buy a domain from there (don't bother buying anything else that they offer, just the domain).
Once you have this (or after a few days), you'll probably want to get a cheap web host too. I recommend web-mania; they're good value, and do the job well.
http://web-mania.com/
That's about 30 a year.
And then you want email; I can recommend using Google Apps for your Domain for this. What this effectively does is give you a Gmail address (with the advantages I detailed above), but using your own domain, like [email protected].
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index .html
The Google Apps thing is free.
