after my divorce my ex husband has run up some debts. am i liable for these.

Probably not, but it depends on what debts they are. If you have no joint financial or commercial dealings whatsoever, you can not be held liable for his debts unless you have peviously given a personal guarantee on any loans or property tranactions that he may be involved in.

Best have a word with your solicitor, but it the debts are in his name that he would be responsible for them, divorced or not, unless as NoGood Boyo says, you stood as guarantour for these loans/purchase agreements.

 

In light of your other question above I'd arrange to see you solicitor and get everything clarified.

No. If they are solely his debts, then only he can be made to pay them. If by some misfortune you were to still have a joint bank account that he overdrew then the bank could look to you, or as NoGood Boyo wrote if you had guaranteed his liabilities, The fact that you are divorde makes no difference, husbands and wives are not liable for one anothers debts, at leat not since 1882.
