does anyone know the cheapest way of cashing a $50 cheque made out to myself at our local banks

There isn't a cheap way. Most banks charge a fixed rate fee of �15 to �20.

You could try auctionpix - google for them. only 90p fee and a hit on the exchange rate. Ideal for small sums.

Have you asked at your bank? When I had a us$ cheque my bank wouldn't take it (it would have cost more to cash than it was worth), but my husbands bank (Barclays) were more than happy for him to pay even smallish $ cheques into his account.
