if youve got a car over 10 years old ....

1. you wouldnt want to be seen in it so would drive very little and so burn less fuel

2. even if not ashamed of it you wouldnt trust it to get you very far withour breaking down

then you get a new shiny reliable one coutesy of the (our) government handout and you are a big burner of fuel / contributor to global warming / kiddy fiddler / and all sorts

The carbon footprint of building a new car is considerable and may be more than can be saved by having a more efficient car to drive.

I disagree with your comments kinell.

My car is almost 10 years old. It has only covered 58,000 miles and is in as good condition as the day I bought it new in 2000. I am certainly not ashamed to be seen in it either. I expect to carry on serving my needs for a few years to come. I would also expect that many perfectly good 10 year old cars have been sent to the breaker's yard when they would have performed a few more years of service for a family who cannot afford to purchase a new/newer modle.

I think the main effects on global warming the car scrappage scheme will have is that is has encouraged more and more foreign cars to be imported to the UK along with all the emmissions created by them being built and transported here.

According to the press the scrappage scheme has boosted car sales this year by 31%. Unfortunately for the UK car industry only two of the top ten selling cars were actually built in the UK. The scrappage scheme has worked wonders for the car industries of Germany, Spain, France, Italy and Korea. Only the British built Vauxhall Astra and the British built Mini appear in the top ten. If the scrappge scheme was intended to boost the UK car industry the it has failed miserably.
