Mum wanting to go back to work
5 Answers
i get child tax each month for my daughter. i am at home at the moment but would love to go back to work. however i am scared that by doing so my child tax will stop. i can only do part time hours as i can not afford child care and weekends are my only option so my partner can have baby. i tried calling the HMRC but they told me they can only tell me how my tax will be affected once i know what i am earning. but i can earn till i know if it's worth me going back. what's the point in earning my tax money away from my baby, i might as well be at home and wait till she starts play group. does anyone know if there is another way of me finding out what i have to earn before my tax will be taken away?
Thank you.
Thank you.

From what you say, it appears your partner is working now. If so, then you will (as a couple) be getting working tax credit as well as child tax credit, assuming your gross income is low enough for you to be entitled to it. If you work as well, your gross income will be added to your partner's and the result is very lkely to be a reduction in working tax credit - although this will not necessarily occur straight away.
Whether you will be better off depends on how much you earn in relation to how much the working tax credit is reduced. To get an idea of this you need to assume a certain income (in other words, the sort of income you think you would be likely to get) & put all the information into one of the online claculators mentioned. Or go to your local CAB and ask them to do the calculations for you.
