I know that cash machines have a restriction on the amount of dosh you can take out each day but say I want to withdraw a couple of grand at once, will it be ok to withdraw a larger amount if I go inside the branch and show them my passport? My bank is barclays by the way.

The Barclays website seems to be particularly unhelpful with regard to your question, Ed. But most banks have fairly similar rules. The Bank of Scotland, for example, requires advance notice if you want to withdraw over £1200 in cash:

It may also depend on the specific branch... the Barclays web page listing account charges includes this (badly worded) caveat in regard of over the counter withdrawals:
"Some branch may require advance notice if you request cash over the counter which is above your daily cash machine withdrawal limit."
