Hello,
Thanks for your answers.
I called them and they asked me to confirm that my postcode was AB1 2CD.
Although it is in my town, I have never lived at that postcode so I could not confirm what the first line of the address was and they could not give me more information. Only they were adamant that it wasn't a case of identity theft: they told me they would find my current address and write to me.
I checked the postcode on the Royal Mail website and found out that it was the address of a flat I should have moved into 18 months ago. The tenant who was supposed to leave decided to stay after all, so the landlady contacted me 10 days before the move to tell me she was cancelling the rental agreement. I cancelled the housemove with BT, but they cocked up and disconnected my line at the address where I was staying after all: it took me 2 weeks to get the phone back, and 1 month to get the internet again (1 day before Chrismas, which means it took me more than 2 months to find another flat...).
Now I've just learnt that BT also opened a line in my name at the flat where I didn't move, billed me at that address, and, as I didn't pay the bills (I never even knew of their existence!), have put a debt collecting agency on the job. Nice...
I've written to the debt collecting agency, BT, and Otelo, with copies of documents, and a nice long covering letter. I'm still waiting for an answer...
I'm so glad I'm no longer with BT: I closed my account with them when I last moved 9 months ago, I had THREE appointments with an engineer, and each time the engineer was 'sent to the wrong address'. I don't have a endless supply of annual leaves! I was with them for 18 months, it was cock-up after cock-up, the call centre is the worst I've experienced by far, and now this! Grrrrr!
