I handed my notice in last Friday, which was the Good Friday (public holiday). Due to the length of time I've been with my current employer, I only neeed to serve one week's notice. As I handed my notice in last Friday morning (via an e-mail to my line manager), I should finish this Thursday. My employer is saying that as I handed my notice in on a public holiday, the notice period doesn't commence until the following Tuesday. Therefore I'm being told that my notice period ends next Monday. Is that correct? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

is the bank holiday a normal working day for you?
Indeed. You can't count the days that the place is closed!

The point of handing in a notice, is to allow your employers to find some cover for you. They can't do that if the place is closed.
if you dont work the bank holidays then how would you expect your boss to be able to find new staff in just 3 days? 5 days is bad enough.
