pre-paid debit/credit cards are they any use?

since i am having mega difficulties getting a bank account with debit card im thinking of buying one prepaid on the net. Does anyone know how these work and whether its just a scam?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.ginger, i was just looking at one of your answers and I have really bad credit and have a step account with natwest wiht a solo debit card....i dont understand why you were turned away from natwest....also halifax do a solo card with a cheque book account if you have bad credit as my husband has an account with them also....hope this helps
Yes. Most of them are! as they are from outside the UK, so you have to pay stupid fee's to top up in pounds etc... Really NOT WORTH IT.
The ONLY uk company offering PREpaid card is CapitalOne.co.uk there Visa credit card is 100% Guaranteed .
You may have to pay between �50-�200 depoist, depending on your credit score.
Just go to Capital One.co.uk, and go to the "help me" section where, based on a few question you answer, it should recommend the secure credit card.
