Definitely in ATM machines - look for those that have the "Visa Plus" symbol (which most should do).
Only in much more obscure countries such as Cuba and China might you have any ATM problems.

As for point of sale, I'm not so sure. Do you have any experience of American merchants accepting it online? This may be indicative but I wouldn't expect to be able to use it widely as a debit card. You can't even use it widely as a debit card in the UK!
