Recession dating is an inexact "science". Most economists agree that a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth, which is only apparent more than 6 months after the recession begins (and since GDP figures are frequently revised, the "facts" often change). Economists in the US are uncertain as to whether the recession here is over or not; the exact end date probably will be fixed sometime next year, and may be revised after that!. Not much consolation to the unemployed, in any case.
