Good Deeds - Silliness and Charity
6 Answers
As you know, a couple of Friends Of The AnswerBank are raising some cash for good causes by doing something stupid: http://home2rome2010.co.uk/
Although it isn't quite as silly-sounding as this:
"Between July and August 2009 he walked from Land's End to John O'Groats with a T-Rex following him stopping in several points along the way raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_Scott
What good - but ridiculous - deeds have you done for charity/good causes?
Also, do you think silliness is the best way to raise money for these causes?

I will also donate if something moves me enough but feel it's distasteful to discuss it or leave your name so people can see the amount etc as I feel it becomes a 'look at me, aren't I a great person' type thing. Charity shouldn't be about that and I've known cases where it's the persons ego rather than the charity that gains the most, (although am willing to accept that if it helps the charity it's not exactly a bad thing).
I think silliness raises attention and that's probably a good thing, how much it brings in over other peoples donations or other types of funding I don't know but I'd be dubious that one off silly events or ridiculous specticals bring in more money as it's a lump sum rather than a steady stream of financial aid. Happy to be proved wrong though!
I sound like a right grumpy bum! :c) (I blame my dad, he's of a pretty similar mind on this sort of thing and it's clearly rubbed off on me).

it's a pity that these Charities have to depend on peoples generosity, I have organized several fund raising events with the last one being for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, everyone was asked to turn out in Black and White and they did, I decorated a large room in those colours too, we had a brilliant night and raised £1200 for the Foundation
