Pensions after death

My Dad receives a pension from the RAF. When he dies, does the pension just stop or does it continue to be paid to his next of kin? He is divorced. I'm not looking seeing what I can get, just curious.

It really depends on the terms of the original pension scheme. My dad had a works pension and my mother continued to get a widow's pension after he died - for me, my works pension will pay a lesser amount to my OH if I pop off before he does.

Military pensions pass to spouse but not to kids.

I have half of my husband's industrial pension but I think it might be different for the armed forces. Best to check with wherever he gets his pension. My husband had to sign some agreement or other in order for me to get this money - if he hadn't the pension would have just finished, so maybe if your father hasn't made any arrangement his pension will just disappear.

It may depend on what provision was made for ex wife in the divorce settlement.

I can't see the pension being paid to anyone else unless they are a child who was dependent on your dad, and then it would only be for a limited period. I can’t see how a pension scheme could afford to go on paying benefits after death.

After a recent health scare, he gave one of my sisters all his documents regarding something he has set up to pay out after his death (to pay for his funeral, etc) but I'm not sure if he gave her details about the pension. As I am the only one that lives with him (we are all above 18) then he always lists me as his next of kin. It's not really something I want to discuss with him or the family though, it will look a little insensative.
