Unfortunately it is up to you to prove that you did pay the money in.

Did you pay by cash or cheque?  If it was a cheque, find out from your bank statement when it was debited to your account and then ask your bank for a copy of the cheque.  Often sending this to the catalogue company will be enough for them to trace it.

If it was cash, you should take your receipt to the bank where you paid the money in and advise them that the catalogue company are claiing that they haven't received the cash.  They should then be able to check their records and ensure that they have sent the funds to the correct place (mistakes do happen!).

So definately get your receipt out and go to the bank.  They shoul dbe able to help.

I agree with Sammy. If you have paid the money in, then you should have a stamp on the bill or a receipt confirming that you've paid it.  You should get the bank to now chase up the payment and confirm where it was sent.  It could be a simple error that could easily be amended.  However, I believe that the onus is now on the bank if you've got proof that you've paid it (ie. stamp on the bill or proof of the cheque being cashed).
Even if you haven't got a receipt, if you know the exact amount that you paid and are able to show which "till" was used, the bank will be able to trace it that way too.
They'd be reluctant to do all of this work for you given that you *should* have the receipt but it's certainly possible.

Its down to you to do it.  I had to do the same thing - after phone calls & a visit to the bank, they eventually provided a copy of the stamped payment slip. I sent a copy to the company (and to the debt collection agency they later instructed).

Unfortunately, 3 1/2 years after I closed the account I've just got a letter from another debt collection agency.  Thankfully I kept all the records.
