I am paid last Friday every month, but my wages haven't gone in and it's now the Sunday. Is this normal? I usually don't really check if they've gone in, but things have began getting a lot tighter and this month I needed my wages to renew the house insurance. Would it be the case they may have always gone in over the weekend? Previous dates have always shown as Friday on my bank statements.

On your second point, it would be very difficult for your company to say to employees that they would have to become self employed to carry on working for the company. HMRC are quite strict about the criteria for being 'self employed' (i.e. paying your own tax and NI). It's not quite as easy as it used to be. The company would very probably still be liable for paying the tax and NI as these people would still be regarded as employees.
The employees are both over pensionable age and the changes come into effect after April. It feels like such a cynical move by the company. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do anything without checking the legality. We deal with finance and taxation. You're right, if we had a compliance visit from HMRC......I don't know if they considered that angle....

Rather than wait for an HMRC audit I suggest the two employees who are being asked to go self employed should make enquiries with their union, CAB or Age Concern or whatever it's called. Maybe the company is allowed to insist they retire once they are past 65 and is therefore giving them a chance to work via a self employed status.
The employers mentioned a pending change in the law which pushed them to do this. Both staff are quite past retirement age. The lady is going to seek advice.
