Would you try to return credit and store cards you found? I recently found some late one night on the floor in the street in London next to a phone box. I assumed someone had dropped them while using the phone. When I got in I called the credit card 'lost card' line and had it cancelled. I asked if they could pass my number on to the person who lost them as I also had her store cards (Nectar, Tesco Clubcard etc). They said they would. A few days later I had a call from the lady and I got her address and sent the cards back to her. She was so grateful and could not believe that someone would do that. It wasn't anything special and no effort on my part - so I am wondering what other people would do?

I can't speak for 'other people', CiderMonkey, but what I wouild do is praise you, and if they had been my cards, sent you a big present. Oh, and yes, I would have done the same as you.
I would have done the same - as i started reading this thought you were going to say you'd gone out on a big spending spree! That has been done to my friend and it's horrible, couldn't imagine doing anything other thanmy best to get them back to their rightful owner! But i guess we're nice people...
I had a credit card arrive in the post last month, the previous occupant of my flat was a doctor and he must have had post sent to a hospital where he used to work and left my address as a forwarding address. They had forwarded the card along with a national insurance tax claim form for a sizeable amount of money! My bf and I debated whether we could use any of it fradulently (mainly joking, obviously) and then I cut the card in half and wrote a letter to the credit card company explaining he obviously isn't at either the hospital or my flat anymore and sent it off. I wrote to the tax office as well. I didn't need to go out of my way to do that though, so I considered it my good deed of the week.

Big night out loads of fun and beer, woke up in the morning minus my wallet - cursing my stupidity I cancelled all my cards and got fed up about all the important stuff (National insurance number card + discount beer card for local pub!!!) I'd lost. 4 days later a strange package comes through the door - no wallet but all my stuff, everything down to the recipts and bus tickets, returned BUT no letter of explanation or how they got my address or anything! I phoned the banks, the gym the library but no one knew anything about it... was it either of you????

I found someone's cards once and the credit card company were absolutely useless. They wouldn't pass on my details. I asked them if they were going to inform the person about the lost card and they said that she was bound to contact them at some point...

CiderMonkey you will be rewarded in heaven as you are a little angel its so refreshing to hear about nice honest people in the world than the other evil B******s who wouldn't think twice about going on a spending spree with someone else's cards.

I lost my purse once on a bus and had quite a bit of money in it and was besides myself with worry I then got a phone call to say that some one had handed it in at the bus depot so went to collect it, everything was still in my purse and i was so releived i could of give that person a big kiss!

I am the sort of person who would hand anything in to the Police station. However, an evil person stole my purse from right under my nose in a fish & chip shop! I wasn't too bothered about the money inside, but there were some beautiful kiosk photo's of our youngest daughter in there. Needless to say, I was heartbroken as I knew I'd never see them again!  How can @resoles like that, live with themselves!
I did do the same & for a short while was a suspect!  I was on my way home from the pub just a teeny bit worse for wear when I found a couple of credit or debit cards just like you, in London, on the pavement, next to a phone box.  So I took a short detour to the police station.  Apparently though the cards belonged to a woman had been mugged about an hour before & I fitted the description of the attacker!  The police eventually believed me & gave me a lift home for my troubles (although I'm sure that was just to check I lived where I said I did).  The irony was not lost on me : - )
I would have handed them in at the police station.
I would have handed them into the police or had a look through to see if there was an address, I would never dream of taking what wasn't mine. I look at it like this. How would I feel if I lost my purse? I'd hope someone would hand it in. Working in a busy shop we regularly find purses and belongings that people have left on the floor or counter, we take them straight upstairs to lost property where the contents are checked and it is logged in a book with the day and time. I lost my purse a few years ago on the bus and that was never seen again. I only had 5 in it but it was the hassle of having to pay to replace my student swipe card and various other cards that annoyed me.

That was very considerate and honest of you, yes i'd have done the same too.

The way i look at it is 'what comes around goes around' (as i think the saying goes!). there have been a few things ive done similar like helping people out when they are stuck at the roadside with a kaputted car- it always seems to happen the same for you if you act in that way !

good on you Cidermonkey and others. you feel good about doing the right thing and I agree with the others, what goes around... and I hope something good happens to you
I would have dropped them all into a police station

Thanks for all the replies. Glad to see you'd all have done the decent thing. But then i suppose I didn't really expect anyone to post a reply saying they'd try to use the cards or anything! But I do believe in 'what goes around, comes around' and hope that all the bad people get their comeuppance at some point!
CiderMonkey, I have just posted an answer on B&S under 'Stealing' & my comments 'What comes around, goes around' echoes what you have written on here. I am a great believer in this too!
I found a Sainsbury's card and i did the same u've got do one good thing in your life don't u!!!!!
I found a Matalan card and i did the same u've got do one good thing in your life don't u!!!!!
not quite the same thing but I lost my bank card and phoned my Citys largest taxi Company as certain it was the only place the card could have fallen out of my pocket.  They told me that they did not keep lost property and that taxi driver would have handed it into a police station but could have been any police station on his routes that night.  I just decided easier to phone bank and cancel card as assume police stations do not circulate lost property lists to all surrounding police stations therefore i could have spent all day phoning round them.
should have said - I would definately contact card company re any cards I had found.
Regarding the bad apples amongst us, my mate found 100 in a cab and immediately handed it to the driver - who promised to take it to the previous customer that he'd just dropped off, my mate stepped out of the cab and then it dawned on him AS IF !!!. Gutted - (for the person who lost it that is) !.
