Have only got to make two (phew!) but are Easter bonnets basically just loads of chicks and stuff stuck on a hat or should there be more of a theme? I have a bonnet and a baseball cap, various combinations of nests, chicks and chickens, plain eggs and sparkly eggs - should I try and make them neatly or just give the hideously expensive bits of tat to the 5 and 7 year old and let them get on with it?

you need to cover the hat in yellow or green crepe paper and add a few daffs, the odd chick and some cut out and patterned eggs

Thanks for that - I'm usually quite imaginative with these things but my brain's not working today. Have got green crepe paper (just in case). Last year was eggs and I made mine/my son's into goldfish 'floating' in a proper fish tank so feel that the bonnets are going to look a bit rubbish in comparison.
let them get on with it

Hi 4get - it's a tricky line between letting them do it themselves and the hats looking a bit crappy and making an effort and showing that you (as parent) have made an effort (and this is not a particularly 'showing-off parents' school).
I went to 'Yellow Moon' bought a couple of kits with all the stuff so my two can make 'em thamselves with a bit of help. Only £2.99 each. - Done.

cant beleive you would say your childrens hats would look crappy :-( poor kids lol
Question Author
Thanks Chris - I was over-thinking it, just need to stick my extensive array of nests, chicks and other Easter tat on the hats and the job's a good 'un!

Hi 4get - I love them to bits but not one of them is 'arty'. The boy hates craft stuff so would stick one chick on and consider it done so that he can go and kill something on the x box and my daughter would just keep adding stuff and sparkly things.
stuff and sparly bits good :-) If I was judging at a school I'd choose the ones where it was obvious the children had been involved, the messier the cuter
In our kids school the girls are making bonnets and the boys are making tie's.

If any boy really wants to make a bonnet, well then he cal.

Hi Jem - fortunately it's just Key Stage 1 (so don't have to get the ten year old to do one) and it's bonnets for everyone. Will give them the hats, the Easter tat and the craft box and let them go for it. Last year's eggs was very competitive although I was very pleased with mine/the boy's.
Hi sher, if you have a Home Bargains shop nearby, they have yellow cowboy hats for the boys in a kit with all the trimmings you could want for just £3.99.............also had the hats alone for 99p if you already have the trimmings!.............bargain!........I would let the children have a go first, andthen help out a bit if needed!...........

Hi Welsh - got the last bonnet from the works today and a load of easter tat so have enough stuff to decorate hats for about twenty children - will have to put the leftovers in the craft box.
Good luck with it then sher!................let the children go wild with all the tat!.............They'll enjoy it, you can always add bits later if needed!...........lol........
My sister won an Easter Bonnet competition once by turning a potty upside down, wrapping it in crinkled-up toilet paper with a big paper bow, and stuffing a load of mini eggs into the paper. She wore it in the parade, too....
My mum used to glue those wee furry chicks on, and mini eggs and cream eggs and stuff lol x
