my 70 year old wife is crippled up with osteoporosis and finds getting into and out of our existing bed difficult, last week she fell and broke her hip she was rushed to hospital and had to stay in to have an operation to repair her hip, so getting in and out of bed is even more difficult, the hospital physio suggested that an adjustable bed would help her, we cannot afford to buy one does anybody know if we can get a grant to buy one?

You need to get in touch with an occupational therapist. My dad got quite a lot of help (stair lift, grab rails etc). Either the hospital or your GP should be able to make initial contact with them for you.

as zac said..OT will visit you at home to do a risk assessment and any special equipment can be provided or loaned...hope you can get sorted soon

OT will be able to permanently lend one to you. They can also help with adaptations to your living arrangements as well.

They completely reconfigured my nans bathroom and she had a fancy electric bed.

When she died it all went back so you don't even have to worry about moving it.

Whatever you do, don't let her get discharged without a descent care package in place and DO NOT say you will be her main carer. The more you do the less help you will have and let's be honest here you are no spring chicken and as much as you may want to help you need as much help as you can get.

I don't know whether the system is different here in Wales but when my husband needed help I got in touch with the elderly care desk at social services. They were very helpful, fitting mobility aids and giving advice. I hope it all goes well for you.

it happens quicker if arranged by hospital OT as part of a care package prior to discharge..LA can do the adaptations but takes longer ; waiting lists etc

Yes You MUST tell them that you need a lot of help to care for her which is true. The broken hip is going to make life a lot harder for both of you.
Get the hospital to arrange the care package as they will be able to do it a lot faster. The hospital can not discharge her until they are sure a correct care package is in place so they will get it done ASAP.

Thank you everybody for your valuable advice, it was very helpful, i shall be in touch with the hospital to arrange for the OT to visit us as soon as possible.
