Scanning family photos for posterity

Over the next week or so I want to scan my family photos for posterity. I am wondering what would be the best DPI setting for general photos. I dont want to go overboard with really high dpi settings....and advice ?????

Remember the BBC's digital Domesday Book project of the 1980's. Unreadable today - they used leading edge laser disc technology. CDs, discs, tape, none of them last that long -you'll have to regularly recopy them to new media. Will your descendants have the technology to read them?
