Separation and Names

I wasn't sure where else to go for this information, but I want to know if I can keep my married name when I separate and divorce? I don't like the idea of changing back to my maiden name and having a different surname from my daughter so I was thinking about keeping it - can I do this? And how would this affect my title (obviously currently Mrs) both now during separation and then after divorce?

Yes you can keep your married name for the rest of your life and just stay as Mrs Bloggs. It will not affect anything.

Could I keep the surname but change the title? Not sure I want to be Mrs with everyone just assuming I'm married.

If you want to be absolutely correct a married woman should be addressed as Mrs John Bloggs whereas a divorced woman would be Mrs Anne Bloggs

when got divorced I kept my married surname as I also did not want to have a different surname to my son. I didnt do anything legal to keep my surname I just continued to use it, I dropped the title Mrs and became a Ms

Technically you can call yourself what you like as long as you do not intend to defraud anyone.

Oh but would I have to use Mrs until we are divorced or could I start using Ms now?

You can use Ms anytime, no-one can force you to use any prefix, you could have used Ms all through your marriage if you had wished.

Iv`e been married 36 years, still with husband and I can`t remember the last time I called myself Mrs. Usually just give my christian name and surname.
