we have just been devestated by the news that my father has only weeks to live my mum has taken it not to bad but i am worried about her financial side. after dad passes away is she entitled to any cuts in the poll tax as she will be on her own or any other benefits that may help her out, she owns her own flat which is a help so no rent, and she does not have a lot of savings either,oh by the way she will be 75 next year if that helps anything.I think she only has her pension to live on so any extra benefits would be a help.so any information would be much appreciated thx all

im so so sorry to hear about your father that is terrible news im sure you must be all so devastated. my advice would be to give your local social security office a ring and they will advise you on everything, im sure that your mother will be entitled to some sort of help with things.

She will have an 25% cut in council tax for being a sole occupant.
She may also be entitled to pension credits and /or supplementary benefits to bring her income up to the minimum.
If your father has a private or occupation pension, your mother may be entitled to a pension of her own, usually much reduced.

Disabled Living Allowance/Attendance Allowance should be claimed now by your father or if he is unable by your Mum ring 0800 88 22 00 this a benefit enquiry line who will be able to issue the forms and give you any advice, this is you fathers right and is not based on means, it is also non-taxable.

Do take all the help offered especially from the medical services, don't let your Mum do too much herself as she will try to do.
