This is what I did: (I wrote my speech about 10 minutes before I stood up, still had everyone in stitches and grandma in tears).
I started by saying this: "When I was first asked to do this speech, I started by thinking about comparing how things have changed between 60 (50) years ago and today. But actually, today is not about how things have changed. Today is about how some of the things that are important to us have stayed the same and evolved with the times........"
I went on to tell a couple of very short funny family stories and then on to say how much me and the other grandchildren valued my grandparents for the time we spend with them and the support they have always offered, the great times we have and continue to do so.
I then read a short snippet from the wedding report in the local paper at the time. Made a couple of references to recently departed friends and family and then raised a toast to the happy couple.
Then I sat down and got very very drunk.
