bubbles appearing on newly painted wall

hi hope someone can help.i painted one wall of my lounge today in vinyl silk,the wall was clean and dry having been washed with sugar soap.to my horror a while after appication all these bubbles started appearing on the wall. i was hoping that once it dried they would disappear but not so and i am left now with raised bubbles all over it.thinking it may be something to do with the new roller i used i did another area with a brush with the same result.having painted many times over the years this has never happened before so any advice would be welcome.

Hi queen, what was on the walls before you painted? Would help to know if there had been paper up, or if you have recently moved in and it's your first time of painting these walls. You say you have painted many times over the years but don't say if it was at this property. There can be a number of reasons for this happening, pva on walls, paste still on them, sealer coat not applied when done first time. A bit more information would help.

Did you rinse off the sugar soap ? It is quite caustic and could react in this way if left on the surface.

hi. i moved here 2 years ago and the walls were matt finish no wallpaper and i painted them silk then without any problems but i decided to freshen it up in time for xmas so bought silk again as its easliy washable.i used dulux 2 years ago and thought id try wilkos silk this time.i did rinse walls thoroughly after washing them down with the sugar soap.ive now given the paint to my daughter to try on her walls to see if it happens again.if it does im assuming its a problem with the paint.i guess i will have to sand down the lumps with some fine sandpaper and undercoat it first.thanks for your replies.

Hi queen, is it just the new emulsion that is bubbling or is it the emulsion that was on the walls before. If it's the new stuff it could be that the old emulsion being a silk finish could need a very light sanding to give the new one a key to stick to it.

hi shedman,its mainly the new paint bubbling but there was one area where it was coming from under the old paint too but when it had dried it did flatten out again it was a much bigger bubble there too.i have to say the wilkos paint is much thinner than dulux so that probably didnt help things,i will never buy cheaper paint again!!

Hi queen, if it's mostly under the new stuff then it is either that the silk needed a very light sanding or as you said earlier the paint itself. I used a cheap one from B&Q years ago and I didn't get the bubbling but it couldn't be wiped down as it would come off on the cloth. Sometimes cheap isn't cheap as it takes longer to put on as it's usually thinner and as in your case you have to redo it, it ends up costing more. I only ever use Dulux these days. Good luck with it.
