that's a bit odd though, your great aunty/uncle is the same generation as your grand parents, so shouldn't it really be called grand aunt/ uncle?

No it's 'great' because it is the generation above, so the generation above your grandmother or grandfather is your great grandmother or great grandfayher and the generation above your aunt or uncle is your great aunt or great uncle. same the other way, the generation under your granchild is your great gandchild and the generation under your nephew is your great nephew, it is a version of the work graduate i believe. You graduate down up or down through your line of ascent or descent.
