Ofsted as above is an exellent suggestion especially as now, they publish reports on inspections on childminders. However your local authority children's service should also be able to supply you with a list (it should be sorted by postcode). In my opinion a good way to go is also to talk to other mothers if you can, and get their impressions on childminders. I have had my fair share of bad experiences with childminders and I can assure you that childminders tell each other all about their clients: does she pay in time? does she collect late? does she have rows with her husband?
Also might be worth going to www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk to check out whether you are entitled to help with your childcare costs. (Look under the working tax credits section) Worth bearing in mind as, to claim credits against child care costs, you need to use a registered nursery or childminder. You can claim up to 70% childcare cost depending on your income and situation.
