If you buy some de scaler for irons it gives you exact instructions as to what to do. .
I realise it isn't the same thing, but I recently de-scaled my kettle with lemon juice. Even tho' it had the sealed element etc it still xcaled, but the lemon juice did the trick.
I ruined my steam iron by putting the wrong sort of vinegar in it - I didn't use white vinegar to descale it - and it stunk of fish and chips, and everything had a dark red stain on it. So I bought a new iron (and some new pillowcases etc) and now I buy a cheap bottle of still water to use instead of tap water. Seems OK.
