good maths website

im looking for a good maths website for my 8year old that is visual in its help in explaining how to do a sum.
a lot seem just to be games (which are fine) but require nothing more than guesswork for the answer

Be sure to spend some time in the various sites... some of them are very helpful and interesting even to squiggly 8 year olds.  Luck!

A lot of websites are geared up to be "drill and practice" i.e. they do exactly what you say, only guesswork is required for the answer.
I don't know if you're UK based and would know his national curriculum level, but I would recommend straightforward counting games using practical apparatus to reinforce his knowledge. You say on another thread he has special needs. He may still need to "see" the numbers before he can begin to manipulate them. A practical session first, followed by pc activities may be worth considering.
Software called "Numbershark" offers lots of practice and reinforcing activities.

Try BBC ks2 maths site, or check out a site such as "EducationCity.com" where you might be able to sign up for a free evaluation. I've not come across programmes that really explain how to do sums, just practice them.
