There are also more formal courses that result in a qualification and which can be taken privately, known as either TEFL or EFL (teaching English as a foreign language).
Some determined students do both ESOL & EFL.
Incidentally, the term evening class has now generally been replaced by ACET (adult continuing education and training) as they take place at all times of the day - our ESOL classes cater mainly for restaurant workers who can't come in the evening so are held at lunchtimes.
