Showering

Do we need to shower daily or are we doing ourselves a miss service by constantly washing away the natural oils that are there to protect & nourish our skin ? I well remember years ago we washed our neck & behind our ears & our little private places every day & took a bath once a week on Friday, & I cannot remember any of my family smelling obnoxious so what is your opinion on this delicate question?

Thinking back though... as we ALL bathed/showered/shampooed etc just once a week, maybe we ALL stank to high heaven but didn't notice ! It's all different now though isn't it? Shower/shampoo every day. In fact, I wouldn't leave the house if I hadn't. !

In the fifties, such ablutions were often used by girls who didn't want to go out with you. If you asked one if she'd like to go and see a film on Thursday, she might well say, "Oh, sorry, Thursday's the day I wash my hair." Cunning little minxes! Can you imagine any young lady using that approach now!
When I worked in museums, the sweaty pong of the 'clothing collections' was truly gaggable. To say nothing of the sweat-stained armpits and much worse which I cannot phrase as I'm a laaaaayd-eeee. I think there was no or little anxiety about whiffing. The petro-chemical industry has stoked anxiety and we scrubadub like gooduns.
Plus - here's a thought - are we psychologically purifying now that we no longer do so spiritually?

janbee has answered for me. I have started to have a once-every-other-day shower this Winter (saves oil and I wash the private bits separately)) and feel just as clean.
When young, the weekly (shared) bath was the norm - we were pretty clean compared to some of my school compatriots (watching a louse falling from the head of a schoolfellow into the drinking fountain is a picture that has stayed with me).
I don't think we stank and I'm unsure about the benefits of the daily shower- you wash natural oils away.

Jourdain,we were down at my sisters the other day and her daughter turned up with her daughter (six years old) who had come home from school with a letter saying that there was an infestation of nits at the school with a list of recommended treatments.I was really surprised when she said it quite common now a days and they don't even have the "Nit Nurse" come round any more.
