Do Antibiotics & Steroids Affect Fluid Retention?
5 Answers
For the last 10 years since being diagnosed with COPD and "moderate" heart failure, I have managed fine with inhalers and diuretics. However, I have had 2 episodes of bilateral pneumonia in the last 10 months and have had to take antibiotics and steroids.
I have just completed a 2 week course of tablets and I've noticed that the Furosemide diuretic 40mg doesn't seem to be working as well as it used to. Normally, after the morning tablet, I would lose about 4/5lbs . Now I am putting on weight even though I have lost my appetite and I maybe only lose 1lb .By the afternoon , I can feel the fluid gathering in my feet and ankles. Will the antibiotics & steroids have had an affect on the fluid retention ?
Should I increase the dosage of Furosemide ?

It looks as though your "moderate " heart failure has been under strain due to your chest problems and is now a little more than......" moderate." Yes, I would increase your dose of Frusemide to 80mgms for two weeks and see if the swellings disappear. I am sure that the steroids are only playing a minor part.
