The very fact that There is a treatment centre suggests that not serious offenders are sent there. So he will not be the first offender to be sent there.

Deportation for trying to kiss a girl would be over the top. Sounds like you are latching on to the flimsiest excuse to deport foreigners.

If you read the article, it says the judge dismissed the "cultural differences" excuse as "rubbish".

The article is sparse on details but first girl: an attempt to kiss; second, a "lunge" (no detail of what this means; a lunge can be a pounce which misses its mark); third: his conversation caused her grave concern.

I have to ask whether drunken or incompetent fumblers, in a nightclub, are as equally guilty of sexual offences as this iriot is?

Three in succession elevates the seriousness of the case, I my opinion. A re-education course seems entirely appropriate.

Lastly, I don't understand the defendant's claim to come from a *conservative* culture. Surely that should mean that they are more hands off, less predatory than what he displayed here.

Is it a backhanded way of saying he thinks our society is too permissive and he expects that intimate contact with complete strangers, in public places (even while commuting) is the norm?

By the way, I wonder if his wife will ever get to hear of this incident?

Warning signs ("no inappropriate touching", etc) or a poster campaign (csption in their languages) ought to be seriously considered but it would be "tarring them all with the same brush" and not get past the PC brigade.

Lots of talk of finding homes and jobs for migrants but no politician dares even allude to attempts at cultural 'reprogramming' before being released into our society. It is seen as "culturally insensitive" to tell them their attitude to women is wrong.

I would suggest that living and working in the UK from 2011 would educate even the most obtuse immigrant of the basics in gender interaction in western society.

The fact that every single day this man will have observed that men and women do not leap on complete strangers should have given him the hint that this is not acceptable behaviour in the society in which he is now living.

I would agree that the 'cultural difference' defence was seriously weak, but the only one available. It is his counsel's job to defend him, hence the offer of the reason, and it is the judge's job to find that reason seriously wanting, and to dismiss it.

As to sentencing, I, as others, have no idea if sentencing has been appropriately applied, but I have to agree that deportation may be something a little OTT.

The fact that his “cultural differences” mitigation was rejected by the judge hardly the point.

The very fact that such ludicrous nonsense can even be suggested by a lawyer sums up the problems presented by this country’s dalliance with “multiculturalism”. That warped philosophy would encourage us to believe that all cultures are equally valid, equally acceptable and that none should be denounced. Whether it was true or whether it was simply concocted for the benefit of the court, this gentleman’s belief that it is acceptable to behave the way he did was put forward as a valid excuse. So we have in our midst people whose “culture” – they claim as an excuse for their transgressions – includes the acceptable molestation of women (but whose religion strangely does not allow them to see a naked female ankle nor a bare head or arm unless and until they marry the woman).

And we wonder why we have problems.

But I agree with andy-hughes here, that after half a decade, he really ought to have sussed out social norms...
